How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing on and off since I was a kid but I never finished anything before my debut. In 2022, I started thinking seriously about publishing a novel after discovering romantasy (yes, I was late to the trend). While my original idea is still a WIP, this eventually led me to write my debut!
How did you land your agent?
I began the querying process after finalizing my manuscript in early 2024. I researched agents, combed through their Manuscript Wish Lists (MSWL), and created a tracker with names, preferences, and contact info. Mainly through Query Tracker, I submitted in two batches of about 10 agents each between March and April.
In May, I received a request from Kurestin to upload my manuscript, and, following a phone call in late June, I officially signed with her in July 2024. Although it may seem quick, it felt like ages before I finally got a positive response. I feel incredibly lucky to work with Kurestin and the team at Root Literary!
What advice do you have for querying?
Perseverance, and patience, is key! Check out one of the many query letter templates online, and be sure to tailor each letter to the agent. There shouldn’t be a lot of guesswork- read the agent’s Manuscript Wish List (MSWL) to figure out what they’re looking for. I also recommend that you query in batches of no more than 10 agents each so that if you receive personalized feedback, you can tweak your manuscript before trying again.
In the end, remember that all authors have experienced rejection at some point in the process, and that rejection is not necessarily a reflection of the quality of your work. Sometimes it just takes a while to find a good fit. Good luck!
Do you listen to music when you write?
I sure do! Specifically, I enjoy listening to fantasy video game scores. I combined my favorites into one Spotify playlist here. When I tell you my Spotify Wrapped looks wild every year…
How long did it take you to write your debut novel?
It took me about 1.5 years before I had a polished manuscript that I felt was ready to submit to agents.
What platform do you use to write?
I use Scrivener to draft and Microsoft Word to edit. If you’re thinking of making the switch to Scrivener, I highly recommend doing a bit of research to learn how to use the platform. There’s a learning curve!
Do you get writer’s block and how do you deal?
I think all authors get writer’s block from time to time. When I’m struggling to get words on the page, I’ll switch up my medium and write in my notebook instead of on my laptop. I’ve found that this really helps get the ideas flowing. I also try to appreciate the little successes. Some days you’ll write 5,000 words, some days you’ll write 100, and some days you might just not have it in you. That’s okay! It’s all part of the process.
What are you currently working on?
I will share updates about my current project soon!
Can we see a photo of Pippin?
